Bishop Arts Theatre Center's 'Black Nativity' and New Grant Impact
The Bishop Arts Theatre Center has secured a $500,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation, marking a significant milestone for the organization. Executive artistic director Teresa Coleman Wash emphasized that this funding will support efforts to diversify the arts and ensure the theater's lasting legacy. The grant will enhance governance and human resource practices, promoting long-term sustainability following a previous loss of NEA funding.
This grant opportunity arose after a nurturing relationship with Mellon Foundation's program officer, Stephanie Ybarra, culminating in a formal invitation to apply after a visit to their production of 'Black Nativity'. The theater plans to utilize this funding to strengthen its artistic and educational programming, aiming to serve as a model for other organizations facing similar challenges. In addition to theatrical productions, BATC offers community engagement programs, including an eight-week summer STEM camp and a young artists mentorship program, showcasing its commitment to enriching the local community.
